Royal Holloway, University of London
Ranked among Britain's top ten research-led universities, Royal Holloway enjoys an international reputation for the highest quality teaching and original research across the sciences, arts and humanities. It currently comprises 18 academic departments and offers courses across a wide range of disciplines. Offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation, Royal Holloway is one of the four largest multi-faculty colleges in the University of London.
Royal Holloway was founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway, a Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist who had made his multi-million pound fortune through the development of patented medicines. The famous Founder's Building, one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world, was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. Since then, Royal Holloway has continued to grow in size and status, building on the excellence of its scholarship and the talents of its students.
Royal Holloway has a strong sense of history and its place in the community. It works with businesses across the region and believes it has a strong role to play as a catalyst for economic growth. Royal Holloway aims to increase interaction, particularly with smaller businesses, and make its specialist expertise and services available to those who would not otherwise have access to them. At the same time, Royal Holloway strives to learn from the commercial world and takes note of the concerns and aspirations of local employers.
Royal Holloway's internationally renowned research teams have brought forth new technologies and ideas. These intellectual properties (IP) and copyrights have been successfully exploited in the marketplace through work with its many regional, national and international partners. Royal Holloway exploits its ever-increasing IP portfolio, not only through licensing but also by the creation of new spin-out and start-up companies. This process has been greatly enhanced by the Surrey Enterprise Hub supported Enterprise Centre.
