Research
The University of Surrey’s status as a research-led university was confirmed by the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in which it was awarded three maximum 5*A ratings
- Electronic Engineering (which also includes Computing);
- Subjects Allied to Medicine (including the School of Biomedical & Life Sciences, the Postgraduate Medical School, the Human Psychopharmacology Research Unit, and the European Institute of Health & Medical Sciences);
- Sociology
The Surrey Research Park
The University owns and runs The Surrey Research Park in which it has invested over £45m, housing over 110 companies which employ 2,750 staff engaged in a broad spectrum of research, development and design activities. Companies such as BOC Group, Canon, Mitsubishi, Borax Consolidated and Hyder have chosen The Surrey Research Park as their UK base.
The Surrey Technology Centre, located on the Research Park, provides space for smaller companies on flexible terms. With over £6M invested by the University of Surrey, it forms a key component of the Surrey Enterprise Hub since it hosts the Hub’s main office, shared meeting rooms and seminar facilities as well as providing incubator space to nurture early-stage technology businesses. The University of Surrey’s SETsquared Business Acceleration Centre is also based within the Surrey Technology Centre supporting early-stage, potential high-growth technology ventures, both from within and outside the universities, to accelerate the development of their businesses. SETsquared provides entrepreneurs and business professionals with business mentoring, guidance and affordable office space – SETsquared clients are also members of the Surrey Enterprise Hub.
